At least 64 civilians were killed in a security raid targeting the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's records.

Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during Operation Containment in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives stated. More than 80 people were taken into custody.

Security forces deployment
Approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers were involved in Tuesday's operation

Fierce clashes erupted when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday morning. The Red Command reacted using gunfire, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities said.

The International human rights organization said it was "appalled" by the police operation, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Mission Consequences

The area of favelas adjacent to the city's international airport is seen as the main base of among the nation's strongest organised crime groups.

Local authorities said no less than 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Dozens of people were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Local Reaction

Community members have described the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

Transport routes stay blocked throughout the region.

Gang Growth

The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their control throughout the region, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.

Security forces reported over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the mission, together with multiple guns.

Mission Context

The coordinated mission by civil and military police follows a extended probe.

Dozens of the suspects are believed to be affiliates of a group from the Pará state who are presently concealed in the city.

Wider Perspective

Extensive security missions are regular in Brazil prior to important worldwide conferences in the nation.

The United Nations climate conference COP30 is taking place in the northern city of Belem in November.
