Administration Reveals Government Employee Layoffs as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark
Administration officials confirmed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on Friday, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.
Formal Statement and Initial Details
The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for letting employees go.
Although Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a DHS representative noted that layoffs would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services used by the public and pledged to challenge the moves in the legal system.
This is shameful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide essential functions to communities across the country,” stated a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.
The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be ended soon.
During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP bill, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.
“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. “Starting next week, military personnel, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”
Judicial and Practical Limits
Last week, labor groups filed for a court injunction to block the government from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge ordered the administration to provide specifics on layoff plans, affected agencies, and whether any government staff had been brought back to carry out layoffs.
A report argued that a funding lapse limits the ability of the administration to carry out firings, citing official advice that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the funding expired.
Consequences for Employees
These terminations occurred on the very day that government employees got only a incomplete payment covering the final days of the previous month but not the beginning of the current month, since funding expired at the start of the month.
A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.
“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our government running,” Stier stated. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”
The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
