Alleged Bondi Gunmen Operated Alone and Did Not Undergo Preparation in the Southeast Asian Nation, Authorities Say.

The two suspected gunmen who carried out the lethal attack at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach, resulting in 15 lives, are believed to have been lone actors, according to Australian police.

Investigators also confirmed that the 50-year-old Sajid Akram, and his son Naveed Akram travelled to the Philippines on 1 November. Their travel plans involved arriving in the main city Manila before traveling onward on the day of arrival to Davao City. The father and son returned to Sydney on 29 November.

Lack of Proof of Planning During Visit

Investigators assert the duo did not partake in any form of terrorist coaching or "logistical preparation" during their stay in the Philippines. Initial inquiries from local authorities indicate they "hardly ventured out of" their hotel.

The incident—described as Australia's most severe mass shooting since 1996—has been officially declared a terrorist incident.

"Our teams are currently analyzing the material," she said, adding that early reviews show that "these individuals are alleged to have acted alone."

National law enforcement Chief Krissy Barrett informed media on Tuesday that CCTV footage documenting the alleged gunmen's whereabouts in the Philippines had been provided to Australian investigators.

"There is no evidence to indicate these alleged offenders were affiliated with a larger organization, or were acting on orders from overseas entities to carry out an act of violence," the police chief emphasized.

But, the duo were additionally not necessarily in the Philippines on a leisure trip, Commissioner Barrett added. She underscored that, since the probe is still active, fresh information may surface.

Motivation and Legal Charges

Previously, the nation's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it seems both accused attackers were "influenced by ISIS" extremist views.

During the attack, Sajid Akram was shot dead by police. He and his son Naveed—reportedly carrying rifles—are accused of having targeted participants at the Jewish festival celebration.

Naveed Akram, who was injured and taken to hospital after the attack, has been charged with 59 offences. These include 15 charges of murder and one count of perpetrating a act of terrorism. He is due to face court in April.

Immigration Information

In the aftermath following the attack, immigration authorities in the Philippines indicated that the older suspect had entered the country using an foreign passport, while his younger suspect used an domestic passport.

The pair had stated the southern city of Davao as their final destination. Their scheduled journey back to Australia was for Sydney.

Davao is a sprawling urban center on the eastern side of Mindanao, the Philippines' primary island in the south. It is noted that, Militant groups have been known to operate in poorer parts of southern and western Mindanao.
