Apex Legends' Specialized Movement Mechanics Are Going Mainstream This Season

The game developers have a special treat in store for Apex Legends gamers, arriving just in time for the holidays. Fans of this game's highly fluid traversal will be pleased to learn that a new movement mechanic is being implemented when the Amped season goes live on November 4th.

Introducing Mantle Boosting

Dubbed "Momentum Boosting" by the developers, this ability gives players a burst of propulsion when climbing over ledges and walls. According to lead battle royale designer Eric Canavese, this technique has unofficially been a feature of Apex Legends for quite a while, usually referred to as "ledge boosting." But it's no easy feat for casual gamers, and typically employed by competitive players in Ranked Mode or esports competitions. In this update, Respawn simplifies the process for everyone to execute these tricky movement boosts.

"This technique have been in Apex for some time, but the movement isn't easy to pull off and gamers would never know it's possible without external guides," the designer states. "We're adding a visual cue so players can clearly identify the timing to activate the high-octane traversal skill, opening up the mechanic and adding fresh strategies to compete for more players."

The Reasoning Behind Make It Accessible

What's the reason for making a once niche technique available to everyone? Lead Legend designer Josh Mohan says developers wants players to feel powerful — including ones who are inexperienced.

"Our community performs advanced techniques like super-gliding and tap-strafes, and we examined at our competition, observed what the community execute, and we said, 'How can we extend some of this power to more players?'" the designer explains. "Because right now, some of these advanced [movement] mechanics are kind of janky to access — you need to remap your keybinds and hit precise timings. We proposed, 'How about we make a more official version?'"

Season 27 Movement Focus

Movement is primarily the name of the game in this season, with Legends Horizon, Rampart, and the aerial combatant all getting enhancements to maintain them mobile. Recovery time on Horizon's Gravity Lift has been decreased, and the Gravity Lift will boost users upward faster than before. Rampart's Amped Cover feature a roof and capability to provide speed boosts to allies in range. But the spotlight is on aerial Valkyrie receiving the most attention this season, with various adjustments implemented to make her stronger, quicker, and deadlier.

"I think many agree that Valkyrie's time has arrived," says Legend designer the designer. "There's no doubt that she's been top-tier in the past, but due to the addition of other characters, mobility perks, and redeployment tools, it seemed like she fell behind in current Apex. This presented a really great opportunity for us to revisit a bunch of aspects in her abilities and essentially restore her to former prominence."

Valkyrie's Upgrades

To reclaim her competitive status in current strategies, the developer says Respawn assessed each of her abilities and introduced some powerful modifications. Her VTOL Jets received improvements, increasing velocity while airborne, and this equipment now recharge much quicker, allowing the player to spend more time aloft. Now she won't take damage from her ultimate ability, which has also been upgraded to tag enemies who take damage from it. Her Skyward Dive ability — which lifts teammates skyward for redeployment or retreat — now takes much less time to activate. Additionally, she gains recently added perk choices that users can choose to conserve resources, widen the area of her Missile Swarm, or accelerate her Skyward Dive takeoff time.

"Her jet pack fulfills the pilot experience," he comments.

Olympus Improvements

Additionally, the lone airborne map, this location, is getting a mobility-focused facelift, with major changes that opens up bottlenecks and renders claiming the high ground more manageable. Respawn state Apex Legends this update is all about giving players the tools they need to keep up with the competition.

"Really, we were looking at the game's core identity as a fast-paced FPS," explains principal designer Josh Mohan.

The battle royale the Amped season releases November 4th at the specified times.
