Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 individuals perished and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to medical facilities.

The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
