Nutrition Assistance Expected to Cease for Over 40 Million During Continuing Federal Shutdown
The United States Department of Agriculture announced recently that SNAP funds from a major federal welfare initiatives will not be distributed during the coming month due to the ongoing federal closure.
Impasse Persists Through Its Third Week
The government shutdown was in its 25th day at the time of the statement, coming after calls from over 200 Congressional Democrats pushing the USDA to tap into emergency reserves to cover November's food assistance.
“Ultimately, resources are exhausted,” the USDA stated. “Currently, no payments will be distributed” on 1 November.
Millions Affected
Over 40 million Americans depend on these monthly payments, as reported by the USDA. In certain states, like New Mexico, reliance on this assistance is as high as one-fifth of the population.
Documents reviewed by journalists indicated that USDA officials chose not to tap reserve funds for November food benefits.
Partisan Impasse
Republicans and Democrats continue to disagree over how to finance and restart federal agencies.
A statement from the leader of a budget research center noted that the White House had chances to take earlier action to prevent benefits from running out.
“They had the ability and responsibility acted before now to make arrangements to utilize available money,” the remarks concluded. “Instead, officials could opt out in an effort to gain political advantage” as Republicans seek to push upper chamber Democrats to support a funding package that would resume the federal government.
States Prepare
Executives in multiple regions declared states of emergency recently to make money available for hunger relief expecting nutrition assistance payments stopping during the upcoming period.
