The English golfer Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Playoff Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer displayed remarkable nerve to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff after a topsy-turvy last day of competition.

Rai sank a decisive birdie putt from just over eight feet to clinch the victory, repeating his sole prior tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off win over Fleetwood.

Sunday's Play Excitement

The champion entered the last day with a one-shot lead over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under closing round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.

The challenger moved one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last green.

Playoff Decider

That led to a playoff at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner triumphed to take the title and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even more person. To play with him the last two days was really special,” said Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s hard to put into words at the moment how it is. It is incredible to be stood here.”

Other Contenders

The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to do, finishing a stroke behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under closing round of ten-under. It was his best-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.

The Danish golfer carded six birdies of his own, but his hopes of topping the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent final-round 63 to finish tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
