The original creators of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated that parent company Unilever stopped the introduction for a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, who co-founded the business alongside his partner, announced that he will independently develop this new product as part of an individual series highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.

Longstanding Dispute Involving Founders and Corporate Owner

This latest announcement deepens the ongoing conflict among the world-famous ice cream maker with Unilever, the British consumer goods corporation that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.

The co-founders have asserted that Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".

The Fruit Flavor as a Symbol for Solidarity

The entrepreneur revealed via social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions regarding naming options and additional components.

“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen stated from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”

This particular fruit has become a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its coloration, which mirror those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.

Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Changes

In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales within disputed territories.

This upcoming product line will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that was first established several years back to support former political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".

Management Shifts and Upcoming Plans

Mr. Cohen revealed how he plans to create other frozen dessert varieties that address concerns that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.

The announcement follows partner Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at the company in September, after decades of involvement, citing worries that its independence had been undermined after Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.

At that time, Mr. Cohen commented that "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."

“My conscience leads me to keep working within the organization to fight for its independence so that the company can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles that it was founded on while upholding for decades," he told journalists.
