The Manager Enzo Maresca Describes Lead-Up Time as His 'Toughest Two Days' at the Club
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca revealed that the preparation to Saturday's win against Everton was "the toughest 48 hours" of his tenure with the London club.
The 44-year-old offered a somewhat cryptic statement in his after-game press conference even after securing a 2-0 win at home courtesy of strikes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those three precious points lifted Chelsea back into the Premier League's top four, potentially improving the mood following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the team's winless run to four matches.
But, when questioned about Gusto's assist and general display, Maresca unexpectedly shared his annoyance over the preceding two days at the organization.
"How the lads want to learn has been superb and this is the explanation why I applaud them - because with a host of challenges, they are performing admirably after a difficult week," he stated.
"Since I joined the club, the previous 48 hours have been the toughest because a lot of people failed to back us."
When pushed further on his meaning, the former Leicester City boss elaborated: "Most difficult 48 hours since I came to the club because people failed to back me and the team."
When asked if he was referring to people within at Chelsea, he replied: "In general. Overall," before specifying when queried if it was aimed at supporters or the press: "I adore the fans and we are extremely pleased with the fans."
Fitness & Suspension Crisis
Maresca also pointed to Chelsea's ongoing injury and suspension issues, noting they had been without key forward Cole Palmer for much of the season, in addition to losing linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and forward Liam Delap to a couple of significant injuries.
"I really applaud the players and the squad because we played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them minus Moises Caicedo, eleven of them minus Cole Palmer, almost all of them minus Liam Delap," he said.
"And this squad, regardless of who is on the pitch, they are doing brilliantly. Today was five games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer there, we said many times that he's our top player but we play almost all season minus our top player.
"We play 5 games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so happy for the players and it's something that I would like people outside to recognize because the commitment from the players is fantastic."
Chelsea's win over Everton strengthened their standing in 4th place in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle to come in the coming days.
Speculation Regarding Maresca's Comments
It was ambiguous who or what prompted Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the most difficult of his time as Chelsea manager.
In that period, the Italian had returned with his staff and players from Bergamo, conducted a session at the training ground, attended a pre-match press briefing where he seemed at ease, and secured a victory over an in-form Everton side.
It was hard to discern whether any particular media reports had irked him, if online discourse were a factor, or if it was something more significant from within the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca specifically took care to deny that it was an matter related to the club's fans, a section of which have not yet fully warm to him since his arrival from Leicester during July 2024.
