During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his term.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Headwinds

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
