The Princess of Wales's Traditional Christmas Carol Concert Honours Community Volunteers

The Princess of Wales is hosting her yearly festive musical service at the historic Abbey, with attendees featuring dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The large audience will listen to a blend of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from actors such as award-winning actors.

Focusing on Kindness and Compassion

The central message of the event, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

Among the guests will be Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose daughter died of a brain tumour, and who founded an organisation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a terminally ill child.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any expectation or recognition, make an profound impact to the well-being of people," Her Royal Highness stated in a letter ahead of the carol service.

Carefully Paced Reappearance

The princess has been making her own gradual return to the public eye subsequent to her illness and medical care, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Musical Talent and Access

Attendees entering the Abbey will be entertained by young musicians backed by the Future Talent organisation, set up with the help of the late Duchess of Kent to widen access to music lessons.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Pembrokeshire, has been helped by the charity, with grants helping towards musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "amazing" to be performing at the concert.

"Pursuing music is often costly," Carys said. She is now enrolled at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to develop their musical skills.

Generations Gathering

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who plays the euphonium, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.

Among the guests will be representatives of different generations.

That will include young Saphia Turner, nine, recipient of a young hero award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to generate funds for community pantries.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been festooned with custom-created holiday decorations, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

The musical lineup includes Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a nautical singing ensemble, Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the perfect culmination."

This annual carol service will be aired by a major network on Christmas Eve.
