The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to check the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on target, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established strikers - had scored just one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
